But really...

From my family to yours, we hope you are doing well!

Happy Tuesday! I thought our first Zoom meeting went well on Monday. As you know, I will be hosting Zoom meetings on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. We will go from 9:30 to 10:00ish.

It worked well having the whole class in on it, so we will continue with that format. In addition, splitting up in 3 smaller groups is not possible with the district's requirements. As I mentioned before, we can always adjust as time goes.

It would be extremely helpful if you could sit in on the sessions (if you are able), so you have a firm grasp on what we are trying to accomplish. The goals here are to correspond, answer any questions and point you (and your child) in the right direction for curriculum materials, lessons, and project ideas. We will be covering reading, writing, and math primarily. It will be up to you (and your child) to determine how much you want to get done with the materials, sites, and lessons I provide. I have been instructed by the district, that kids are not to receive grades at this time, so please do not feel pressure to meet deadlines or for the work to be perfect. This is meant to be engaging and educational, and not to add more stress to an already precarious situation.

Our Google Classroom is up and running. I realize that many of you (and your kids) may have a lot of questions or have run into some issues. Please know that this is a learning process for us all and I will do my best to help and find solutions.

One thing I am adding is "Virtual Office Hours." While we will meet as a class on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, I am going to host online Zoom meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30. I will host an open session that you will be able to join, to ask questions or get help if you need it. I will send out a separate email with a link that will stay the same for those meetings, so you don't have to go to a new session (Meeting ID) every time. In the meantime, please keep emailing me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Lastly for now, if you need to check out a Chromebook (if you need one), please email me and I will make the arrangements for you to pick one up. As of now, the district has said only one per household, if you have multiple kiddos. Thanks.

Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Weller Elementary School

Happy Wednesday! I hope you are able to see out your windows still with all the new snow...and it is still coming down. Either I or someone from the school should have been in touch with you over the past week to check in and simply say hello. I have been working a lot with the other teachers in our building and district to imagine and design what the next 4-6 weeks are going to look like for schooling so here we go (please keep in mind that this plan may be slightly altered depending on what is working and what is not)...

I would like to host Zoom meetings on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in the morning from 8:30 - 10:30 am. I am thinking groups of 8-9 students at a time, for us to check-in and for me to go over some things that I would like for them to be working on. I'm imagining each session going for about 30 minutes. In short, your child would have 3, 30-minute sessions per week total for the first week. We can always adjust from there. Perhaps we can add more, change the times, or something else, but this will be our starting point. Our first session will most likely start Monday, March 30th, and I will let you know what time/session I have your kiddo scheduled for.

To do all of this, we will have a class web site, we will use Google Classroom, we will use Khan Academy. I have been working on building these tools in collaboration with Mrs. Roth and Mrs. Richardson. The new addresses are going to be:

BLOG (as you know it here has been changed to): www.wellerwhalesblog.org
WEB SITE (the old blog address will now the class web site): www.wellerwhales.org
*****Please keep in mind when you visit the new web site, that it is still very much a work in progress and there will be ongoing updates throughout the week and after.*****

In the meantime, please tell the kids that I miss them tremendously and I cannot wait to see them, even if it is virtually for now.  Also, please have your kiddos reading (SSR) for 30 minutes a day (minimum), and journaling for 20-30 minutes until I give further instructions next week.

That is it for now...I will be keeping things as simple as I can.

It's a good life!

But really...

We are going back to the basics here!

Well, well, well...here we are. I just got out of our first staff meeting back and expect more meetings and information to come daily. A lot has been thrown our way over the last week, and much of it has evolved and changed as this situation is fluid. I am posting below what I know for now.

I want to take this opportunity to tell you how much I care about your kids, and to let you know that I miss them tremendously. I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe. I cannot wait for this mess to be over, so we can get back on track with the rest of our year. As of now, I am still planning our Poetry month (April) lessons and activities. Pie n' Poetry Night, Ice Skating, and Twin Bears are still a go! This week, it is my goal to reach out to each and every student/family with a phone call, to check-in, and simply to say hello! In that conversation or by email, if there is anything that you need, please let me know and I will try to help, no questions asked. I also believe that the school district is working on breakfast and lunch plans to provide kids who receive free/reduced hot lunch available for curbside pickup. Some other staff members will also be reaching out for other reasons, so you may receive more than one call from the school. It is only because we care and we have different things to discuss.

As for homework and assignments. Mrs. Young was in the middle of her FTST and we were also finishing up a lot of things (Persuasives, Current Events, Lantern Poems to name a few). I am going to be working on updating grades and narratives for report cards this week (Due by Friday). I do not expect any drastic changes from what is in the grade book now. Mrs. Young also has a few assignments to enter yet. Moving forward, I will be building a classroom web site where you will be able to access curriculum materials to download and work on at home. I will put up things like math worksheets, book report options, and writing prompts! I will let you know when it is finished so you can get busy if you choose. Please keep in mind that this work should be considered "Engagement Activities," NOT required (per the district), and will not be "Graded."

Here is what I have from the District and the Office of the Superintendent per Dr. Gaborik:

How long will schools be closed?
Right now, schools are closed until March 27, 2020.  As COVID-19 spreads in other states, however, we are seeing school districts extend closure through the end of April and beyond.
While I am hopeful that the preventative measures being taken in Alaska will mitigate the transmission of COVID-19 in our state, Fairbanks educators will utilize the next two weeks to begin planning for potential long-term school closure.

My children have items in the classroom and/or locker that we need at home.  Can we stop by the school to get them?
Contact the school directly to make arrangements.  While students and families cannot access classrooms or lockers, we will make every effort to get these items to you via curbside pickup.

What if my children receive free and reduced meals?
Many amazing and generous community partners have volunteered to assist with meal production and distribution.  In addition, our Nutrition Services department is developing a plan to continue free and reduced meal services.
We will send an update, and ask that you watch the district website and social media posts for more information.

Is there anything school-related my child can do over the next two weeks?
Governor Dunleavy has indicated the next two weeks are non-student contact days.  This means there will be no academic work required of students.
We plan to provide Engagement Activities During Closure which will be available on the district website beginning Monday, March 16.  Schools will share the link as well. Teachers who currently have systems in place for online delivery of materials and communication may also be sharing engagement activities directly with their students and families. These engagement activities, however, accessed, are not graded and not required but available if parents want them.

What if the closure lasts longer than two weeks?
District educators will be planning for long-term closure.  Instructional delivery will look different at each grade level.  We will send updated information as it becomes available.

I heard everything will be done online.  What if our family can’t access materials online?
Maintaining instructional and academic continuity for a diverse community of 13,500+ students during extended school closure is a daunting task.  The district will do the best we can to accomplish this goal. Our educators are committed to meeting the needs of ALL our students.
Over the next couple of weeks educators will develop instructional plans for both online and traditional activities.  Each school will be thinking about how to best continue instruction for students in their respective communities. We will utilize our existing resources to the best of our ability.

What about sports and activities?
To facilitate social distancing and mitigate the spread of COVID-19, all-district sports and activities are canceled at this time.  Additionally, events planned in school facilities by outside user groups are also canceled. We will continue to evaluate and update as the situation evolves.

Where can I get more information about the district’s response to COVID-19?

We will continue to post updates at https://www.k12northstar.org/coronavirus

Last two weeks...
Spring break is here, and so is the snow . . . but our sunlight has returned and with it the long, Alaskan days that lead to summer. I hope you are all enjoying some well-deserved rest and relaxation with your kids, because they are amazing!

Our third quarter ended with pizzazz. In two short weeks students created lantern poems, practiced kindness and filled a kindness jar, hand-sketched Alaskan plants, crafted word wheels, powered through a paragraph scramble, logged how snacks affect learning, began Science Notebooks to collect data, figured out exercise math, made math quiz Kahoots, and so much more.

In between it all, they found time to visit Mrs. Leon's Greek Gods Wax Museum, view the displays at the Science Fair, collect Coins for Corn (and help build the Weller playground), deliver Girl Scout cookies, and begin our 4th grade Readathon--the fundraiser for our Twin Bears trip this May.

Each Friday, to celebrate their learning, we enjoyed a special activity. During one week they unraveled Human Knots, and the next, they enjoyed a PJ day. Of course, no pajama party is complete without stuffies, relay races, hula hoop antics, board games, marbles, and extra time for art and reading. Below, take a peek into our classroom . . .

HOMEWORK
ONGOING
--Readathon Reading Logs (ongoing)
--If your child needs additional time or help with in-class assignments, please let me know. I will be doing weekly check-ins with the kids on their progress and I may be in contact with you if we need to send some work home.

***A brief note about homework. It is my philosophy that homework is an opportunity for students to practice skills that they have learned in school that day/week. The benefits are proven and tremendous. I try to keep things simple: 20 minutes of reading practice (reading logs), 20 minutes of math practice (worksheet), and 5-10 minutes of spelling (1 page per night). If your student is working on homework for more than an hour each night (Monday - Thursday, none on the weekends), please contact me so we can discuss things further. It is not my intention to make life impossible for you at home.

***Please keep in mind, projects, or tests we have in class may have to be brought home to be finished or to study. Please ask your child if they have completed their work and check PowerSchool regularly.

ONGOING INFORMATION
READING LOGS
Reading logs are a regular part of our class. Students will receive "points" for each day that they read a minimum of 20 minutes at home. The purpose: for students to read each day (not 100 minutes over the weekend or 40 minutes on Tuesday to catch up for Monday).

Reading logs will be due on a rolling basis and should have dates read on them. I will give credit as they are turned in and filled out correctly (please initial these). The points students receive will be added to their overall reading grade, counting towards their final grade.

It is simple, if students read and turn in their logs, they will see their grades improve significantly while naturally benefitting in fluency and accuracy. If they do not, they will not be given a "0" on the assignment, they simply will not receive any points.

I have a yellow folder by the classroom front door filled with new reading logs. Email me with any questions or concerns, please.

GOOGLE DRIVE
You can access all of your student's digital assignments online and work at home if you would like. Simply go to www.gmail.com and type in their email address and password. Then find the Google Menu (where you will find the Drive, Docs, and Slides) icon in the top right corner (it is a nine-square grid next to their s-number). This is where they will make their Google Slides Presentation for their Biography Book Reports. All passwords have been reset and synched to their individual defaults for the start of the school year. Please do not make any changes. It is as follows:

Password: s#g

User Name for example: s123456@student.k12northstar.org
