Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Weller Elementary School

Last week...
Was a short and sweet one. Salmon Dissection you say? WHAT! It was awesome and I have the pictures to prove it!

Even though I would have rather been with the kiddos on Friday, the Professional Development for District employees I attended was powerful and engaging. Check out the keynote speaker here: George Couros

We are more than halfway through the first quarter and the kids are rockin' their TDLs.

For your convenience, below is a copy of our Q1 TDL (To-Do-List). I printed copies for all the kids and can send one home for you if needed.

This week...
We will make a big push to progress through our To-Do-Lists as there are a lot of assignments on there. DOL and Spelling Packets will be sprinkled in, along with our class novel, but I will be giving the kiddos a lot of time to work on their tasks during class. Mrs. Young and I will be here to help, guide, and differentiate where needed. I will also be meeting with students one-on-one to go over where they are at with their progress.

Friday, October 4, 2019 (Sorry for the late notice, I just found out we were approved for this)
--Field Trip to Herring Auditorium at Lathrop HS to see "We Banjo 3." I have 2 spots for chaperones. The cost of the trip is $5 per person including chaperones, first come, first served style. If you are able, can you please send in some $$$ with your child this week, to pay for the show and transportation. We will be leaving Weller around 9:30 AM and returning around 11:30.
We Banjo 3 (Band's Web Site)
See them play here! (Video Link)

Per usual, I got a fair amount of grading done last week, and yet again, I have a medium-sized stack of papers to get through today and tomorrow (that stack just doesn't disappear, it seems to re-grow), so please be patient and keep checking Power School periodically.

Here is the link to Power School: https://premier.k12northstar.org/public/

Last week, I finally heard back from the District about P/T Conference sign-ups, and they are opening up a digital format through Power School, but not until the week before...yes I have already given them grief about the need to open it up earlier. As soon as I have more information, I will be sure to provide you with an update. Thanks for your patience, and if you are not pleased about this, feel free to contact the district and let them know wink wink...Parent voices are far more potent than teachers on these types of things.

Please check out the "Dates to Remember" section at the bottom of the blog...I have added a lot of stuff with more yet to come.

***A brief note about homework. It is my philosophy that homework is an opportunity for students to practice skills that they have learned in school that day/week. The benefits are proven and tremendous. I try to keep things simple: 20 minutes of reading practice (reading logs), 20 minutes of math practice (worksheet), and 5-10 minutes of spelling (1 page per night). If your student is working on homework for more than an hour each night (Monday - Thursday, none on the weekends), please contact me so we can discuss things further. It is not my intention to make life impossible for you at home.

***Please keep in mind, projects, or tests we have in class may have to be brought home to be finished or to study. Please ask your child if they have completed their work and check PowerSchool regularly.

ONGOING INFORMATION
READING LOGS
Reading logs are a regular part of our class. Students will receive "points" for each day that they read a minimum of 20 minutes at home. The purpose: for students to read each day (not 100 minutes over the weekend or 40 minutes on Tuesday to catch up for Monday).

Reading logs will be due on a rolling basis and should have dates read on them. I will give credit as they are turned in and filled out correctly (please initial these). The points students receive will be added to their overall reading grade, counting towards their final grade.

It is simple, if students read and turn in their logs, they will see their grade improve significantly while naturally benefitting in fluency and accuracy. If they do not, they will not be given a "0" on the assignment, they simply will not receive any points.

I have a yellow folder by the classroom front door filled with new reading logs. Email me with any questions or concerns, please.

GOOGLE DRIVE
You can access all of your student's digital assignments online and work at home if you would like. Simply go to www.gmail.com and type in their email address and password. Then find the Google Menu (where you will find the Drive, Docs, and Slides) icon in the top right corner (it is a nine-square grid next to their s-number). This is where they will make their Google Slides Presentation for their Biography Book Reports. All passwords have been reset and synched to their individual defaults for the start of the school year. Please do not make any changes. It is as follows:

Username: s#@student.k12northstar.org (for example: s123456@student.k12northstar.org)
Password: s#g (for example: s123456g)

Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Weller Elementary School

Last week...
Art Specialists were in the house, and the kids made some creations inspired by Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky was an improvisational artist that believed colors and musical notes were related. They listened to music and made abstract art using only color, line, and shape. I have them on display in our classroom and will send them home soon.

The kids are well underway with their state reports. This project crosses curricula by way of reading (research), writing, and social studies. It is significant and worthy of a large block of class time for the next month or so. Sprinkled in, is DOL, spelling, GeoNotes, STEM, science, and SSR, read aloud, and our class novel. We are in full swing and halfway done with the first quarter, and I love life with this class!

Thanks for sending in cereal boxes for book reports, most have been prepped and are ready to be made (after the book is read of course). We have also started two new art pieces: I can't imagine a world without...
and Parabolic Curves (math class only)!

For your convenience, below is a copy of our Q1 TDL (To-Do-List). I printed copies for all the kids, and we are plugging away already.

This week...
Is a short one but very busy. There is no school on Friday. The District has planned Professional Development Sessions all day at Lathrop HS (yes, I would rather be with the kiddos), and I will be out of the building tomorrow for administrative work. Mrs. Young (our UAF student-teacher) will be captain of the ship, and she is more than prepared and capable of the rewarding task. She and I have been at school today planning, prepping, and grading.

On Tuesday, we will be dissecting salmon! I have facilitated this lesson for several years now, and it has always been epic! All are welcome to observe and help out. We should be starting around 12:45 if you are free and would like to join.

I caught up quite a bit on grading last week, and I again have a medium-sized stack of papers to get through today and tomorrow (as life goes for a teacher), so please be patient and keep checking Power School periodically.

Here is the link to Power School: https://premier.k12northstar.org/public/

I have finally heard back from the district about PT Conference sign-ups, and they are opening up a digital format through Power School, but not until the week before...yes I have already given them grief about the need to open it up earlier. I have added more dates below, and I am finalizing some of the FACE arts performances for our class. My goal is to have at least one field trip per month with the class this year, with a cluster of trips at the end of the year. More on that at a later date.

Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Weller Elementary School

I don't know about you, but I have a lot of leaves to clean up! I'll take this weather though!

Last week...
We had an epic trip to Ballaine Lake. The weather was absolutely perfect, the kids loved it, and they were engaged at all five stations: Aquatic Insects, Terrestrial Insects, Six Room Poetry, Marble Printing, and of course, a Nature Scavenger Hunt! I have read through all of the poems, and WOW! I can't wait until you see them. A special thanks to the parents who chaperoned and for sending in a donation to help with the cost of transportation, both made a huge difference.

I also introduced our State Report Projects, so please ask your kiddo which state they have and start thinking about what you guys would like to bring/make for the potluck to conclude our work. I will publish the date and information for that soon.

We started our class novel, Charlotte's Web - a classic - by E.B. White and so far, I think the kids are really enjoying the story but also, the format in which we are exploring it.

For your convenience, below is a copy of our Q1 TDL (To-Do-List). I printed copies for all the kids, and we are plugging away already.

This week...
We have a lot going on, State Report research, Art Specialists will be here on Tuesday, TDL, Charlotte's Web, Topic 1 Unit test in math, Cursive Handbooks, DOL, oh my!

I have been working diligently getting grades put into Power School and keeping up with all the work the kids are doing (I may or may not have a small stack of papers on my desk). If you have not yet, please check them out. Some kiddos are already missing more than a few assignments, and others have risen to the challenge. Admittedly, I give a lot of work, but it is all in the best interest of your student. I have high expectations, and I am confident that each and every student will grow and learn a tremendous amount this year! Thanks for your support at home, it truly makes a big difference.

Here is the link to Power School: https://premier.k12northstar.org/public/

Lastly, for now. If Parent-Teacher Conference (Online) signups aren't published this week by the district, I will have a backup plan to get going on that. I understand that you may need time to plan or get off of work to be here, so I hear you. I am in the same boat myself and it is frustrating. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Weller Elementary School

Last week...
Was a great one...several groups were successful with our STEM challenge called "Towers." They also had a blast in PE with Mrs. Simmons. She had an array of activities for the students. I hope you enjoy the pictures. I tried to get everyone in at least one shot. As the year progresses, I will be able to do so more often.

Most kids have finished their Summer Reflections Final Drafts, and I'm looking forward to sharing them with you, along with their Autumn Haikus and a few other pieces at parent-teacher conferences in late October.

We also worked on DOL, Cursive Handbooks, Math Unit 1, Read Aloud, poetry, and a few reading comprehension activities.

I have met with a few kids individually, to help them select appropriate leveled books for their upcoming Q1 Book Reports. I will send home directions and a rubric for the assignment this week. Please help them with this. It is a Cereal Box BR.

This week...
We start our class novel together, Charlotte's Web - a classic - by E.B. White. I realize that some students may have read it already, but when I polled the class, it was only a few (2), and we will dive into the text quite differently than expected. We will explore reading comprehension, vocabulary, inference, character development, and so much more.

I sent home a field trip notification form. We are going to Ballaine Lake for science/art/ELA explorations. The other fourth grade classes will join us, and we will have five/six stations (depending on volunteers). We will depart Weller at 9 AM and return around 2-2:15 PM, tomorrow, Tuesday, September 10, 2019. As I mentioned in the notification form, this trip will be paid for from class funds, but if you would like to send in $5.00 to defray the cost of transportation, that would be much appreciated. No worries either way.

Q1 Book Reports, State Reports, States n' Capitals, and Charlotte's Web will all be introduced, while DOL, GeoNotes, Spelling Lesson 2 will remain constant. Our first quarter TDL ("To Do List") is starting to take shape.

Class pictures are this Thursday, September 12th.

Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Weller Elementary School

Labor Day: The first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

For more information about Labor Day, follow the link below! Some interesting stuff!

I hope you enjoyed your long weekend! My family and I had a chance to spend some precious time together. Fall has always been my favorite season of the year. Below is My wife Meagen, and my daughters Zemra and Zarina. We are expecting another little girl this October. I will severely be outnumbered!

Last week...
Our class completed their fall MAP progress monitoring assessments, and the results are in. It appears that many students were reading a lot over the summer, so great job parents. Because MAP tests take up two full mornings, we are still ramping up our academic campaigns. However, I sent home spelling practice packets that were personalized for individual needs, and I hope they were accurate. Please let me know otherwise. I also received several reading logs back, so the prize box was exciting on Friday...Speaking of Friday, did you say pancakes? Well, yes, we filled ourselves up, and I was especially impressed with how appreciative the kids were. Another sign of how sweet this class is!

We started two read-aloud books, Mrs. Young is reading James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl, and I have begun Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper. Both are entirely different, but excellent, no doubt. Speaking of reading, I will be introducing our Q1 book reports, now that I have some reading level data. I will meet with kids individually to help them select appropriate leveled books and send them home with directions and a rubric for the assignment. Please help them with this. Lastly, We will start our class novel next week. Stay tuned for the selection, I am still deciding which to begin with, as I have a few in mind.

On Friday, I sent home a field trip notification form. We are going to Ballaine Lake for science/art/ELA explorations. The other fourth grade classes will join us, and we will have five/six stations (depending on volunteers). Aquatic Invertebrates, Terrestrial Invertebrates, Marble Art, Six Rooms Poetry, and the final two stations will be set this week. This will be on Tuesday, September 10, 2019. We will depart Weller at 9 AM and return around 2-2:15 PM. As I mentioned in the notification form, this trip will be paid for from class funds, but if you would like to send in $5.00 to defray the cost of transportation, that would be much appreciated. No worries either way.

Most students have finished their first few art projects, Perspective, and Warm/Cold Trees. They are now on display, so pop by to see em'. We will send them home at conferences.

This week...
We will change speeds a bit. We have a short week, but I am optimistic and ambitious. Math will resume, and homework will be assigned. I sent home 1-3 and some extra credit over the weekend for students that wanted it (yes, some asked). We will have time to finish 1-3 in class Monday afternoon either way. Please check with your child by asking which teacher they have for math class, as we have a "Walk-to-Math" program in fourth grade.

Technology is not yet in full swing. I will aks the students sign in to their PowerSchool accounts, explore their Google Drive, and start their first assignment, Autumn Haikus. We will work more with the Chromebooks as the year progresses, but let's ease into it for now. I firmly believe technology is an integral part of the classroom, but it needs to be strategically implemented and limited.

I would like to have all students finished with their rough drafts of their Summer Reflections, with some students finished with their final copies.

See below for more info about ongoing assignments and homework.
