Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Kids and Weather with Mr. Mike Shultz from Channel 11 News.
Alaska Room!
Alaska Room!
Indoor kids yoga!

This is the last week of school until the much needed winter break. It also means that this is the final opportunity to makeup assignments before report cards. I will finalize the grades next week and you should receive your student's report card the first week in January.

I hope you enjoyed seeing your kiddos on the nightly news giving some great weather information!

Thank you to all who have donated coins, winter clothing, and food. You are a true example of inspiration, compassion, and being involved for your children. All-in-all, the school raised over 30 boxes of clothes and $700 in funds. Our class has raised over 200 pounds of food for the local food bank, putting us in first place! Well done and thank you again!

Classroom party and book exchange on Friday: I would like to have a little celebration at the end of school Friday 12:30 - 2:00 where the students can play games that they design and then have a "White Elephant" style book exchange. If you would please send in you student with an age-appropriate book that is wrapped, that would be great. Think 3-5 grade reading level. I also anticipate having some snacks/food, so if there are allergy concerns, please email me and we can make special arrangements.

Last week we started our first AMP Training (Alaska Measures of Progress) and tried out yoga in our classroom for the first time! The students seemed to like it and we will try some more this week! The National Scrips Spelling Bee is coming up in February and I will send the kids home with a list of words to study from, but check online for more. This week we will have a class spelling bee to determine the four students that will participate in the school-wide spelling bee. We will also have one alternate.

None - Happy Holidays

*Please keep in mind, projects or tests we have in class may have to be brought home to be finished or to study. Please ask your child if they have completed their work before you have signed their planner.

ONGOING INFORMATION

I hope you have seen the newly implemented reading logs. After winter break, I would like to start those on a regular basis. I have not yet determined how the kiddos will get "credit" for those, but I am thinking of an incentive program...I will let you know how we will proceed, but keep an eye out for those in the future.

I sent home the calendar for presentations in January:
  • Part one is to keep a reading log (reading at home, filled out at home, turned in when finished with each sheet)
  • Part two are step books (done in class)
  • Part three is a Google Slides Presentation (started in class and may be worked on at home)

GOOGLE DRIVES - I am going to keep this information here for a while

Happy Thanksgiving - No School

From Mrs. Dunavin and The Student Council:
Student Council is sponsoring a winter gear and coin drive for the community of Savoonga, Alaska.  We are looking for clean winter gear, such as coats, snow pants, boots, hats, scarves, and gloves.  Clean out your closet and send your clean used gear to needy students in Savoonga.  The competition starts Monday, November 16th and ends December 11th.  The class that donates the the most gear earns a prize and the class that donates the most money earns a prize.  All money raised goes to purchase additional gear and provides for shipping costs.  Thanks for considering this worthy cause!

Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

We have a lot of tech coming up these next few weeks!
I hope you enjoyed the fresh layer of snow this weekend!!!

LAST WEEK - we got A LOT done in an exciting week of learning!
  • The kiddos dissected squid during our SeaLife Center Assembly on Friday.
  • We explored "Perspective" during our Art Specialist lesson on Thursday.
  • We finished our Towers STEM lesson part two.
  • We have started our States of Matter unit. On Friday we made can implode...it was so great!
  • We learned about hyperboles, so when you get a moment, ask your student to give you some examples.
  • We have started typing our final drafts to our fictional narrative stories for our States Reports.
  • We have also uploaded and started using our Google Drives and student gmail. This is a wonderful resource for a multitude of reasons. The first of which is that you can access all of your student's digital assignments and work at home online if you would like. Just go to gmail.com and type in their email address and password. Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

It was a Happy Halloween!!!

TOWERS PART ONE

WHAT A WEEK!!!
Thank you so much for attending parent-teacher conferences! Our class had a 96% rate of attendance and that is indicative of what a wonderful group of kiddos I have this year. Your ongoing and continued support is amazing and truly makes a difference in your student's education and future!

THANK YOU to all our parent and student volunteers this past Friday. The Halloween carnival was a fantastic time and our class raised almost $500 for field trips/class activities. The kiddos designed, produced, and ran the very first carnival obstacle course on the ramp, and we sold a good amount of grocery bag holders. We still have some left so keep that in mind for the approaching holiday season! We also have Casserole Cozzies made by Mrs. Kara Beck (great idea). Bags are $10 (think fundraiser) and Cozzies are $20 (they are awesome). We can also take orders by the way! Examples below!

Special Thanks to:
Mrs. Beck
Mrs. Marshall
Mr. and Mrs. Wagner
Mrs. Boyle
All the kiddos that stayed after school and during the carnival to run our fundraisers, all the families that donated their time and materials for grocery bag holders, and anyone else I may have missed...sorry if I have!

We capped off our week with pumpkin carving, roasting seeds, music, pizza, and games for our classroom party of Friday! This was much deserved!

I have registered the domain and started forwarding the class blog at www.puffinclassblog.com to make things a bit easier to follow. The blog will stay the same, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CHANGE ANYTHING. This is just another (shorter name) way to access the same page. The site address is also and still www.mrsassmansclass.blogspot.com, this is just an FYI.
