Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Just a little friendly reminder. Last Friday was a
special occasion, but please no candy in the
classroom. Thanks!

THANK YOU to everyone who came out to the Halloween Carnival. It was a night of fun, good food, great company, lots of activities and candy, and successful fundraisers. As you may know, the PTA organizes the event for kids and families to come together for a night of enjoyment. The event also allows classrooms to raise money for school activities and trips, which is a secondary goal. Our class successfully completed the Engineering Design Process as a group (ASK, IMAGINE, PLAN, CREATE, IMPROVE) to create an awesome obstacle course. I was so proud of their hard work and for running it all night. As a class we raised almost $300. We will donate half to the Pearl Creek PTA because they are awesome, but because they support our school in countless ways. The rest will go towards our Twin Bears Camping Trip in the spring.

One More time: We have a short week coming up due to Parent-teacher conferences (tomorrow and Tuesday). I look forward to meeting and discussing your wonderful student. But really, I am one lucky teacher.

Academically: I hope we are able to finish up our State Research Reports this week. I have computers checked out every morning, so the kids will have plenty of opportunities to do so. Next week we will be hitting our poster boards pretty hard, so this is important for our time frame. KEEP IN MIND: Our POTLUCK is quickly approaching, November 17th from 5-7 PM. I will remind you at Parent-teacher conferences. Please try to make it, it is becoming a fourth grade tradition and has been very fun.

MATH: This week we will be finishing up Topic 5. Due to the short week we will start Topic 6 next Monday. Topic 6 focuses on multiplying using Expanded Algorithm across 4 digit numbers (partial products), and Standard Algorithm (the way we learned to multiply :)!

ONGOING INFORMATION
READING LOGS
Reading logs are a regular part of our class. Students will receive "points" for for each day that they read a minimum of 20 minutes at home. The purpose: for students to read each day (not 100 minutes over the weekend or 40 minutes on Tuesday to catch up for Monday).
The logs will be due on a rolling basis and should have dates read on them. I will give credit as they are turned in and filled out correctly (please initial these). The points students receive will be added to their overall reading grade, counting towards their final grade.
It is simple, if students read and turn in their logs, they will see their grade improve significantly while naturally benefitting in fluency and accuracy. If they do not, they will not be given a "0" on the assignment, they simply will not receive any points.
Please look for these to come home this week. I have a yellow folder by the classroom front door filled with new reading logs. Email me with any questions or concerns please.

GOOGLE DRIVE
You can access all of your student's digital assignments online and work at home if you would like. Just go to www.gmail.com and type in their email address and password. Then find the Google Menu (where you will find the Drive, Docs, and Slides) icon in the top right corner (it is a nine square grid next to their s-number). This is where they will make their Google Slides Presentation for their Biography Book Reports. It is as follows:

Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Last week was a busy and exciting one. The kiddos are making real progress on their State Research Reports and some have started their poster boards. On Friday, we had a school assembly and basketball final, with a surprise visitor from an American Ninja Warrior. The "Eskimo Ninja," visited our class to sign an autograph at the end of the day!

This week we have a few changes to our regular routine, including Pumpkins and Pancakes tomorrow morning from 9:30-11:30. Feel free to help out and have some breakfast! No spelling this week :)

The annual Pearl Creek Halloween Carnival is this Friday, October 28, 2016. We will need a few parent volunteers to help maintain the obstacle course with the kids. Half of the proceeds will go to the Pearl Creek PTA and the rest will go towards the fourth grade activities fund.

Halloween costumes in school: Students should be prepared to be in school/class all day. Face covering masks or full make-up costumes are prohibited during school hours, per school policy. ***Students may wear costumes to school, but save the face paint for the carnival please***

Thanks to those parents who have sent in $9.00 for the field trip last week. There are still about 9 kids who did not bring in money yet. Please check with your student. The Women of the World performance was excellent and culturally rich.

One more note about Friday. The students have filled their "Marble Jar," earned a class celebration, and voted on an Electronics Party. For 90 minutes, on Friday afternoon (2:00 - 3:30), the students will be allowed to play games on electronic devices. This will be the ONLY time allotted for this activity and it will be monitored. The students will not be allowed to access the internet on their device as the school has blocks on personal devices. For those who do not have a device, I have reserved the iPads for the class and they may play math games, Stack the States, Prodigy math, or Kahn Academy.

MATH: This week we will be moving ahead on Topic 5, which focuses on multiplying by 10 and 100, partial products, and using rounding to estimate. I anticipate this being a quick topic as the students seemed to have a good grasp of multiplying across zeros.

Parent-teacher conferences coming up: Monday, October 31, 2016 and Tuesday, November 1, 2016. Mark you calendars, the students brought home reminder notices last Friday.

I have decided to put a little "Math" Section in the blog, so here we go:

MATH: I feel fortunate to have a really nice group of kids that are eager to learn! Last week we explored place value and rounding up to the millions. This was a challenging unit, but the class came through. This week, we will be studying adding and subtracting across three and four digit whole numbers, including multiple zeros.

One way you may help your student in math, is to practice skip counting. This can be done simply: in the car to or from school, before or after dinner, bedtime, breakfast, etc...It makes a big difference. I have been impressed with the progress students have been making learning their times tables and I would like to see us keep the same momentum.

WHOA!!! Time Flies! This is the last week of the first quarter and chance to turn in late work/re-dos! I have allotted time for the kiddos to work in class this week to catch up. Students that are up to date, will continue their State Report research papers. I will be updating PowerSchool as things are graded, so please be patient; a lot of assignments come in this week :)
