Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Weller Elementary School

It certainly feels weird typing, "Week one in the books" during the third week in January, but here we are, and it was nothing short of amazing. I was elated to have the kids in our room, seeing their happy faces. We accomplished a lot this week. We are working our way through Topic 9 in math, DOL 4, Warm/Cold Trees, and we started Rorschach Haikus.

The kids did an excellent job wearing masks all day, adjusting to the new and wonky schedule, and they followed procedures, so that we can stay safe and in school. We eased into things this week, talked a lot about classroom procedures, and got to know each other in (literally) a new dimension.

Next week...
I mentioned to the kids, several students have not finished their Persuasive Essays, Biography Book Reports, and/or State Reports. Ms. Nuss and I will be pulling kids and separating them by projects that are overdue. We will work with those students in small groups, to help get those things done. I will also be introducing new projects - Superhero Stories, State Posters, and Cereal Box Book Reports - to kiddos that are ready. We will finish up Rorschach Haikus and keep our class books going (MSOTM and WTRFG).

In case you missed it: Breakfast and lunch are free for all students, until the end of the school year. This is an option and not required. I also want to let you know that the kids will not be able to heat up food from home in the class microwave. We have been told that that is not allowed. The school usually provides a lot of options for breakfast and lunch, so I think that this should be okay. You can find the school lunch calendar right below if you need. I have to say, it saves me about 10-15 minutes of prep for my own kiddo each morning, and she likes the lunches (for the most part).

Speaking of free breakfast, I will be making the kids pancakes on Monday...just a little something I have been doing for years, for my classes, and it's about that time :)

Lastly, we will be making slime! If you have time or think of it, feel free to send in some Elmers glue and some Barbasol Shaving Cream! I have a good supply here already, but to help with the re-stock is always a good thing. No worries if you cannot.

Paper reading logs should have gone home. I explained to the kids, that if they read 5 nights, get their logs signed, and turn them in next week, then they will get a ticket for the prize box drawing on Fridays. Ask them about it!

-Kids should be reading for 20 minutes every night, and recording it in their reading logs. I will have a folder filled with them by the door. They may also continue with their digital reading logs too. Either one works for me. If they fill 5 days a week, they will get a ticket for the weekly prize box drawing on Fridays.
-Kids will receive about 20-30 minutes of classwork to complete each night that we have school.  This can include math, spelling, GeoNotes...Please work with them on this if they need help. I would like for students to have no more than 40-50 minutes of work each night. Please let me know if this expectation is beyond reach and we can talk about how your child can be successful. Please again, I don't want tears along the way or any surprises at the end of the quarter!

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please feel free to call or email me anytime to discuss things further. I hope you find this information helpful and useful.

READING LOGS (In-Person)
Reading logs are a regular part of our class and the students' overall reading grade. Students will receive 5 points for each day that they read a minimum of 20 minutes at home. The purpose: for students to read each day (not 100 minutes over the weekend or 40 minutes on Tuesday to catch up for Monday). I have a yellow folder by the classroom front door filled with new reading logs or they can submit through our GC. If a student reads for 5 days or more, they will receive a ticket for the "Prize Box" drawing. We draw prizes weekly, on Fridays at the end of the day.

READING LOGS (Remote Learning)
Reading Logs are required and will count towards the students' overall reading grade. Kiddos will receive 5 points for each day that they read during the school week. They can be turned in either digitally in our Google Classroom or by paper during our drop off and pick up days.

Last Week...
Was productive as we started a few new things. Spelling Packet 7 should be mostly done by now, as well as GoeNotes 8. We did these together in our Zoom sessions. We also started our next class novel, My Side of the Mountain (MSOTM in the future), by Jean George Craighead. I think that the kids are loving it so far. We did quiz 1 in the packet together too. Finally for now, we finished The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, and have started Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. New Year's Resolutions should have been completed, but I will press on that next week.

Next week...
Well, if you haven't heard by now, no school on Monday (MLK), and kids are back in the building on Tuesday. I am so excited to see them all. We will be busy establishing routines and procedures, while moving forward with our current agendas. It will be a bit tricky to start, but I am confident that we will be successful and appreciative.

Lynn sent out a few emails this week regarding new pick-up and drop-off procedures, so please check those out. We are trying to streamline things a bit to get you in and out of here as quickly as possible while maintaining proper social distancing guidelines. The District also sent out a parent survey asking for your input about what characteristics you think (as a parent) a new Principal should have when being considered for Weller next year. There was also a survey sent out from the District, to nominate yourself or another parent from the school to serve on the hiring committee. In case you missed it: Principal Input Survey.

Quick reminder: Breakfast and lunch are free until the end of the school year. This is an option and not required. I also want to let you know that the kids will not be able to heat up food from home in the class microwave. We have been told that that is not allowed. I have had several parents ask me about what the kids should bring on Tuesday. First and foremost: Please have the kids bring back their Chromebook and charger. We will use them here daily. Also, please have them bring any and all paperwork that they have gotten from school, including books from our classroom. We can go through things and start to organize and prioritize. As for materials, below is the list we published in the fall. Try to have your kiddos bring as much of this as possible. They will only be able to use their own supplies. Feel free to bring the stuff that they have been using all this time. Nothing has to be new. If for some reason you cannot get this stuff, please do not worry. I will make sure everyone has what they need, no questions asked. Thanks and I hope that answers your questions.

Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Weller Elementary School

Last Week...
Was a short one but we settled back into routine nicely. This is our last week of remote learning (so as the plan goes), and I am beyond excited to have the kids back on the 19th. I want to touch on that a bit.

I will have a conversation with the kids about what school will be like when they return. As of now, the school is requiring that all kids wear masks at all times except for lunch (which will be in our classroom). The point I will try to make is that: school will look and feel a different from what they know. For example, kids' desks will be spaced 6 feet apart, and they will not be allowed to work in groups or with partners. Lastly for now, students will not be permitted to heat up food or snacks in the classroom microwave. However, breakfast and hot lunch will be free to any/every student for the rest of the school year!

Last week we talked about New Year's Resolutions and what it means to set realistic, time-bound, motivating goals. I think we made some real progress and we will again explore goal setting this coming Monday. Ms. Nuss finished out our week, subbing for me Friday as I brought my littles in for their annual wellness checks and regular vaccinations (not COVID vaccines). We are almost done with The Adventures of Huck Finn and we will be starting Where the Red Fern Grows soon.

This week...
We will working on Spelling Packet 7, GeoNotes 7, and starting our class novel, My Side of the Mountain. I will be making a push for students (who have not yet) to finish up their State Report Packets, Persuasive Essays, and Biography Book Reports. These have been ongoing projects and it is time to finish them up. If students still have issues completing the assignments, we can certainly work on them here when the kids come back, but I would prefer to get them going on some new projects. For students that have completed their work, I will be introducing our Q3 book reports (Cereal Box Book Reports), and our Q3 formal writing piece (Superhero Stories). We will also be working our way through the rest of DOL 3 and starting DOL 4. Finally, we will be starting Topic 9 in math this week, and we should be able to fly through it, as it is a review of simple division.

Our Google Classroom "Stream" is a thing! On most days, I will post on our Stream at the end of our last session (12:00 - 12:30), a list of tasks that the kids need to finish up with for the day, and the things we have been working on. It has proven to be helpful, so I will keep on doing it. Some work may spill over into the evening and becoming essentially, homework...I promise, no tears!

Please have your child reading for 20 minutes a night. Then, have them record it on their reading logs. When the log is complete, you may either send it in, take a picture and email it to me, or enter it digitally in our Google Classroom.

Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Weller Elementary School

Welcome back! I hope you and yours had a lovely winter break and were able to spend time together, relax, and eat lots of food (of course)! Here's a little fun pic of our visit to Santa's house...I don't think my youngest, Zoe liked it very much! Once again, thank you for all the kind cards and thoughtful gifts before the break. I truly feel privileged to be your child's fourth grade teacher this year!

This week...
Tomorrow we will back to our "Normal" schedule. We will ease into the week, the new year, the third quarter, the second semester...I will be asking the kids to share what they did over the break and I will talk a little about New Year Resolutions and goal-setting. We will be talking about that most of the week, goal-setting and what it means, how to do it effectively. Tomorrow is also Wednesday, and I will have some things ready for you to pick up, if you are able. I have added some items to our agenda for this quarter below and I would like to get some stuff out asap so we can get started. A copy of My Side of the Mountain is one example. It will be our Q3 Class novel.

As you know by now, the school board voted to bring students back into schools on Tuesday, January 19th, 2021. If this sticks, we (Weller) need to know if you are planning to send your kiddo in. Thank you to those who have filled out the survey already, and if you have not had the chance, please do so. It will help us immensely in planning and prepping. Here is the SURVEY link again.

Here is the link to the Weller Newsletter by the way.

I just finished report cards and finalized grades this afternoon, so those should become available via PowerSchool sometime this week.
