Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Weller Elementary School

Hello, families of Room 23, Ms. Nuss here!
One week down, two to go. I have been enjoying the freedom of having the classroom to myself,  and I love that I have formed stronger bonds with the students. Getting to know them has been a blast, and I am sure that I will carry this experience with me into my first year as a fully-fledged teacher.

This week...
We will continue with our TDL campaigns. Students are finishing up assignments and projects that have been ongoing and they are moving ahead with new ones. I am just loving those superhero stories! I am also enjoying the kids' responses to our daily writing prompts. As for what we are "continuing," Anne of Green Gables and our class novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins. Finally, I introduced a new art project last week, that incorporates English/Language Arts and social/emotional learning. Specifically synonyms for our EMOTIONS. It is called WordPop, and I can't wait to see the final products!

Our science unit is well underway: the students have already done some background explorations on erosion, weathering, and deposition. On Monday, we will have a expert, guest speaker from the University of Montana (one neat thing about this whole pandemic thing) Zooming into our class to discuss our topics at hand. How about that math? Fractions will be on the agenda yet again.

This is the last week of the third quarter, and Mr. Sassman and I have been spending a lot of time updating grades and the grade book (PowerSchool). We will continue to do so this week and report cards should be available (online only) after spring break.

Next Week...

-Kids should be reading for 20 minutes every night, and recording it in their reading logs. I will have a folder filled with them by the door. They may also continue with their digital reading logs too. Either one works for me. If they fill 5 days a week, they will get a ticket for the weekly prize box drawing on Fridays.
-Kids will receive about 20-30 minutes of classwork to complete each night that we have school.  This can include math, spelling, GeoNotes...Please work with them on this if they need help. I would like for students to have no more than 40-50 minutes of work each night. Please let me know if this expectation is beyond reach and we can talk about how your child can be successful. Please again, I don't want tears along the way or any surprises at the end of the quarter!

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please feel free to call or email me anytime to discuss things further. I hope you find this information helpful and useful.

READING LOGS (In-Person)
Reading logs are a regular part of our class and the students' overall reading grade. Students will receive 5 points for each day that they read a minimum of 20 minutes at home. The purpose: for students to read each day (not 100 minutes over the weekend or 40 minutes on Tuesday to catch up for Monday). I have a yellow folder by the classroom front door filled with new reading logs or they can submit through our GC. If a student reads for 5 days or more, they will receive a ticket for the "Prize Box" drawing. We draw prizes weekly, on Fridays at the end of the day.

Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Hello, families of Room 23, Ms. Nuss here!
Tomorrow, I will be "taking over" the classroom for the next three weeks of school. This is for my full-time student-teaching practicum, a requirement for my Elementary Education program at UAF. I will be in charge of delivering our class curriculum, which I have been planning and prepping for the past several weeks. While Mr. Sassman steps back to observe and guide, he will also be here to work with kids individually throughout the days. I am confident that we will have an excellent time together, and I am eager to get to work.

This week...
We will continue with our TDL campaigns. Currently, some students are finishing up assignments and projects that have been ongoing while others are moving ahead with new ones. Either way, we will stay busy and learning while continuing Anne of Green Gables. We will also be starting our new class novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins! I have a science unit prepared, and we will be exploring erosion on Mondays and Fridays. Finally, get ready for fractions, 'cuz here they come!

We are getting close to the end of the third quarter, and Mr. Sassman and I will be spending a lot of time updating grades and the grade book (PowerSchool). We will be transferring grades from our Google Classroom and our paper copies here at school, so keep an eye out for that.

Picture Day!
We will be able to have picture day this year. Our class' day and time are: Thursday, February 25, 2021 at 10:10 AM. If your kiddo misses for some reason, I believe there will be a make-up day. I will let you know, when I know.

Next Week...
Next week, I will continue my full-time student-teaching and help to wrap up any third quarter assignments. Math and ELA will continue as planned, as well as some science and health lessons strategically implemented. I would like the students to be done with as much of their work as possible, so we are really going to make a good push for productivity.

This week...
Thank you so much for attending conferences this week. I hope that you enjoyed them as much as I did. I just love student-led presentations. The kids did a fantastic job preparing, and the growth that I have seen this year has been amazing, despite all of our obstacles. If you missed the chance to meet and would like to set something up for the future, feel free to email me and we can get that going!

This Thursday and Friday, we will continue with our TDL campaigns. Currently, some students are finishing up assignments and projects that have been ongoing while others are moving ahead with new ones. Either way, we will stay busy and learning while finishing the last two chapters of Where the Red Fern Grows. We also finished My Side of the Mountain last week. The kids have been asking about the sequel, so we may just go...On the Far Side of the Mountain!

We are getting close to the end of the third quarter and I will be spending a lot of time updating grades and the grade book (PowerSchool). I will be transferring grades from our Google Classroom and our paper copies here at school, so keep an eye out for that.

Next Week...
Ms. Nuss' full-time student-teaching campaign to begin. Starting February 22, Ms. Nuss will be "taking over" the class for three weeks as "lead teacher," planning, prepping, and delivering our class' curriculum, while I take a step back to observe and guide where needed. This is a regular part of a student-teacher's internship, as I had to do when I was in the UAF program. I am confident in her abilities and she has been working hard all year to build rapport and the skills she needs for this endeavor.

On the Horizon...

This week...
We will dedicate some time in the mornings for Student-led Parent-teacher Conferences coming up on the 15th and 16th. I sent an email out on Friday with a link to a tutorial video on how to sign up. Here it is again: Parent-teacher Conference Sign-up Video Tutorial. It is less than two minutes and will help guide you. Please let me know what you prefer, in-person (at school), telephone, or via Zoom (the link and info to the meeting room are at the bottom of this blog post). I ask that your child be present, so they can take the lead. Again, we will be preparing for them this week. I think that you will be pleasantly surprised! One last note here...please be on time for your appointment. I often have back-to-back appointments and we want to respect everyone's time slots as best we can. Thanks so much.

We are almost done with My Side of the Mountain and Where the Red Fern Grows, just in time for Ms. Nuss' full-time student-teaching campaign to begin. Starting February 22, Ms. Nuss will be "taking over" the class for three weeks as "lead teacher," planning, prepping, and delivering our class' curriculum, while I take a step back to observe and guide where needed. Valentine's Day is coming up and the kids have asked if they can bring in "stuff" for the occasion. I said yes, as long as we can follow the plan:

1. If you bring for one, bring for all.
2. Please bring your "stuff" in by Wednesday, so we can fill individual baggies and let them sit idle until Friday afternoon (germs and all).

Please keep in mind that this is optional and not required.

This week...
We had a good start this morning. As the kids arrived, I noticed that they are starting to get the routine down. Put stuff away (cubbies and desks), settle in, eat breakfast (if applicable), work on the daily writing prompt (in our Google Classroom) for about 15 minutes, class meeting, ELA or sometimes independent work...and the rest of the day continued!

The kids are kinda all over the place with what they are working on. I mean that in a good way! Some kids are finishing up book reports, persuasive essays, and state reports while others have started their poster boards, superhero stories, and cereal box book reports. These will be our main projects for the third quarter, so independent work time is dedicated for these assignments. Of course we will still progress through our "Staples" like Math, DOL, spelling, and GeoNotes.

As the kids seem to be settling in more and more, I will start pressing a bit more to see: Cursive Handbooks, Paper Reading Logs (please sign these parents), and Student-Led Parent-Teacher Conference Prep. Speaking of conferences. I will send out a link, directions and a tutorial on how to sign up for them as soon as the District open it up. It shouldn't be much longer, and if you have done this before, it is the same as last year. Oh and...I am going to start sending math homework home this week. It should equate to about 20 minutes at the most. Please let me know if it is taking your kiddo more than that.

I wanted to make slime last week, but it looks like it will have to come this week.

Please again, I don't want tears along the way or any surprises at the end of the quarter!

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please feel free to call or email me anytime to discuss things further. I hope you find this information helpful and useful.

CLASS WEBSITE
If you have not yet, please browse our class' website: www.wellerwhales.org. It has a lot of great resources and we will use this from time to time. I am currently making adjustments and enhancements on some pages, but the site is full and live.

READING LOGS (Remote Learning)
Reading Logs are required and will count towards the students' overall reading grade. Kiddos will receive 5 points for each day that they read during the school week. They can be turned in either digitally in our Google Classroom or by paper during our drop off and pick up days.

ClassLink/GOOGLE CLASSROOM
ClassLink is the portal in which students can access their Google Classroom. Once they log into their Chromebook, kids can access the bookmarks folder on their Chrome browser and click on ClassLink. That will bring them to the apps page where they will find Google Classroom.
