Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

"Towers"

And the Olympics...

Disclaimer: I tried to get a shot of every student during one of their events, but there were several going on simultaneously at times...

Last week:
The Pearl Creek Olympics pretty much dominated the week (and our mornings), but it was well worth it. Special thanks to Mr. Dunavin and all the parents that came to watch and/or help. It was a massive undertaking and an even bigger success. We also had our first STEM lesson last week. As you can tell from the pictures, every team was successful!

PLEASE mark your calendars.
Back-to-school night is this Wednesday, starting at 5 PM.
Hope to see you there.

This week:
We have a busy week ahead of us...Tuesday in the afternoon we will be dissecting salmon with Mr. Hinzman. In the past, the kids have loved this learning initiative and are fully engaged...pics will be plentiful. Also, we will be going on our second hike/mini-field trip of the year with our first grade buddies from Mr. Hensel's class on Wednesday afternoon. We will explore Frog Pond and the Boreal forrest right in our own backyard. It will be great to compare and contrast when we go in the winter, and then again in the spring. Feel free to join if you have some time. We plan to leave at 2:30 and we will be back right as school ends (please let me know if you are picking your kiddo up early that day).

We will be trying to finish up our Summer Reflections Final Drafts and I will be introducing the awesomeness of our BIG States Reports Project!

Next week: Pillow-making Extravaganza. Thank you for volunteering if you are able. If you have a sewing machine and are free, please sign up if you haven't already. I sent the kids home with a letter about the event. See pictures below for what they will need. If you are unable to obtain these items, please let me know (no questions asked), and I will make sure your child is prepared.

ONGOING INFORMATION
READING LOGS
Reading logs are a regular part of our class. Students will receive "points" for for each day that they read a minimum of 20 minutes at home. The purpose: for students to read each day (not 100 minutes over the weekend or 40 minutes on Tuesday to catch up for Monday).
The logs will be due on a rolling basis and should have dates read on them. I will give credit as they are turned in and filled out correctly (please initial these). The points students receive will be added to their overall reading grade, counting towards their final grade.
It is simple, if students read and turn in their logs, they will see their grade improve significantly while naturally benefiting in fluency and accuracy. If they do not, they will not be given a "0" on the assignment, they simply will not receive any points.
Please look for these to come home this week. I have a yellow folder by the classroom front door filled with new reading logs. Email me with any questions or concerns please.

GOOGLE DRIVE - I will be sending the kiddos home with their specific login information soon
You can access all of your student's digital assignments online and work at home if you would like. Just go to www.gmail.com and type in their email address and password. Then find the Google Menu (where you will find the Drive, Docs, and Slides) icon in the top right corner (it is a nine square grid next to their s-number). This is where they will make their Google Slides Presentation for their Biography Book Reports. It is as follows:

Username: s#@student.k12northstar.org (for example: s123456@student.k12northstar.org)
Password: s#g (for example: s123456g)
