Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Weller Elementary School

Math lessons are now recorded and available
on our Google Classroom!

This week...
WOW! Four weeks in and we are rolling along. While we have definitely been slowed down by this pandemic and online learning platform, we have some real nice momentum going for us. Kudos to you and your student for attending our meetings every day and for completing the tasks they have been assigned. I feel so fortunate to have your kiddo in my class and for your support. Without you, this doesn't work.

Brown Bag autobiographies are almost done, only 2 kiddos left. We finished our first Social Studies worksheet (1a and 1b) together. Please keep that and send it in during our next drop off day. I have started uploading another round of grades to PowerSchool, so if you can, please go online and check things out there. If you need help doing so, just let me know.

The kids should have finished letters A-D in their Cursive Handbooks by now. Next week we will start E and F. Just the letter practice for now. When they finish with that, they will go back and do the poems. We had a great conversation about handwriting, presentation, and presenting skills this morning and I think it made sense. Feel free to ask them a little about that, see what they learned (hopefully)!

Our Google Classroom Stream has now become a thing! I have recently started posting on our Stream at the end of each day, a list of tasks that the kids need to finish up with for the day, and the things we have been working on. I believe it is helpful, so I will keep on doing it.

We started Charlotte's Web and have read through chapter 5. I think that the kids are enjoying the classic novel, as I do every year. I sent home (if you have picked up your envelope) some worksheets that we are going to do together that coincide with the book - reading comprehension and vocabulary stuff.

We should be done with the first two paragraphs to our Summer Reflections, and on our way with the third and final, concluding paragraph. I have loved hearing some of the kids' stories so far. I hope to have rough drafts finished up by the end of next week, and final copies ready for drop off to the school on or before September 23rd.

I also hope to have the final copies of, "I can't imagine a world without..." back by the 23rd, so I can put them up in the hallway. The kids have received several compliments from staff around the school about how beautiful and colorful it makes the hallway, and it seems just a little like kiddos are here.

If it wasn't clear yet, Wednesday, September 23rd, 2020 will be our next assignments/materials drop off and pick up day...I will put together a list (because you know how much I love lists) of things to be returned and things being sent home.

This week I sent home (again, if you picked up your child's envelope) a few things. I am trying to make your trips to school minimal, so I have aimed to have a new packet ready every other week. Let’s try to use the same folders to drop off and pick up. I have put your kiddos name on theirs and will have a second folder ready for you so we have two operating folders, a drop-off, and a pick-up. Does that make sense? Thanks so much.

This week's folder included:

-Topic 1 Math test (to work on Thursday and Friday this week)

-Topic 2 Math Worksheets (for next week)

-GeoNotes 1 (for next week)

-Charlotte's Web Packet 1 (for next week)

-DOL (for next week)

-Spelling Packet 1 (for next week)

We started our next Read Aloud, Wonder by R.J. Palacio. It is an uplifting book about an elementary student attending school for the first time in fifth grade. August Pullman (Auggie) has a facial deformity that has led him to be homeschooled, but now he is willing, ready, and able to give it a go with other children. It is a story about adversity, diversity, acceptance, perseverance, kindness, and triumph. So far, so good!

Next week...
-Continue Charlotte's Web by E.B. White (read together, worksheets together, and discourse)
-Paragraph three and finish with rough drafts of our Summer Reflections
-Start GeoNotes 1
-Start Spelling Packet 1
-Finish and turn in Math Topic 1 Test
-Start Math Topic 2
-Charlotte's Web Chapters 1-4 worksheets
-DOL 1 (Daily Oral Language - sentence editing)
-Continue with our Daily Writing Prompts
-Finish Art/Writing (I can't imagine a world without...)
-Continue with Cursive Handbooks (Letters E and F)
-Haikus (for sure this week, it's Autumn, big time)

Homework Already???
Please have your child reading for 20 minutes a night. Then, have them record it on their reading logs. When the log is complete, you may either send it in, take a picture and email it to me, or enter it digitally in our Google Classroom. Some work may spill over into the evening and becoming essentially, homework...more to come on that, but I promise, no tears!

The chore of the week: This week, ask your parent/guardian which house plants you can help watering/taking care of.

One more time: you can check here, the class blog (weekly) www.wellerwhalesblog.org, and our Google Classroom Stream (daily) to see where we are in life...but really. Please do not worry if there is too much work, we can always allow for some more time if needed. Conversely, if your child is needing more, I have plenty of enrichment items, just let me know!

I mentioned last week that we have a student-teacher this year. Ms. Nuss has put together a little introduction.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

My name is Christina Nuss, and I will be student-teaching in Mr. Sassman’s fourth-grade class this year. I started at Nordale Elementary School in August, but due to staffing and curriculum changes, I have been reassigned to Weller Elementary School and I can’t tell you how excited I am to be here. I am a senior at UAF’s School of Education, and I anticipate graduating in May 2021, with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education.

I was born and raised right here in Fairbanks, Alaska. I always imagined that someday I would attend UAF. By the end of my freshman year, it became clear to me that I was meant to be an educator. I love the sense of community that I get from colleagues in school, but also from the teachers and schools that I have visited throughout my studies. Children bring great joy to my life and I love seeing them grow and learn, so working with your students this year will be both my pleasure and honor.

My philosophy of education is a direct reflection of my childhood and family history. Growing up Russian in Alaska has been unique and I have heard many tales about my ancestors. In particular, my mother and grandmother often shared their experiences as educators with me, and there is a stark contrast between teaching in Russia and teaching in Alaska today. In addition to discourse and anecdotal stories, I have read countless books and watched many movies that solidified my thoughts on becoming a teacher one day.

I believe that every child is capable of learning and with the right teacher in the room - a passionate teacher that loves what they do - anything is possible. As the year progresses, I will be integrating more into the classroom (online and in-person), delivering lessons and units, and eventually taking over the class in the spring for a few weeks. I look forward to helping in the classroom, teaching your child, and being a Weller Whale!

Sincerely,

Christina Nuss

If you have not yet, please browse our class' website: www.wellerwhales.org. It has a lot of great resources and we will use this from time to time.

READING LOGS
Reading logs are a regular part of our class. Students will receive "points" for each day that they read a minimum of 20 minutes at home. The purpose: for students to read each day (not 100 minutes over the weekend or 40 minutes on Tuesday to catch up for Monday).
The logs will be due on a rolling basis and should have dates read on them. I will give credit as they are turned in and filled out correctly (please initial these). The points students receive will be added to their overall reading grade, counting towards their final grade.
It is simple, if students read and turn in their logs, they will see their grades improve significantly while naturally benefitting in fluency and accuracy. If they do not, they will not be given a "0" on the assignment, they simply will not receive any points.
Please look for these to come home this week. I have a yellow folder by the classroom front door filled with new reading logs. Email me with any questions or concerns, please.

GOOGLE DRIVE/CLASSLINK
You can access all of your student's digital assignments online and work at home if you would like. Simply go to www.gmail.com and type in their email address and password. Then find the Google Menu (where you will find the Drive, Docs, and Slides) icon in the top right corner (it is a nine-square grid next to their s-number). This is where they will make their Google Slides Presentation for their Biography Book Reports. It is as follows:

Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Weller Elementary School

This past week...
Is in the books and I think we have a little routine in place. I can say that I am extremely impressed with the commitment and dedication of the students and the support you have been giving at home (parents/guardians). I am proud to report that we have had outstanding attendance at our Zoom meetings and we have received praise from both teachers and administrators alike! Let's keep it up!

We accomplished most of what we set out for, and will continue our campaigns into next week. We finished Frindle and learned that Mrs. Lorelei Granger was actually rooting for Nick the whole time! What a great ending. We are almost done with our first paragraphs to our Summer Reflections and I love hearing the kids' stories. Paragraph two will start next week. The next art piece I introduced was, "I can't imagine a world without..." and the kids are nailing it. I have integrated a little English/Language Arts into the activity, by asking the kids to type up a list of ten things that they feel are essential to life and happiness. We transferred those using tools like a ruler, colored pencils, and an ultra-fine point Sharpie to make a beautiful visual representation using shading.

Changing speeds, we been working through Topic 1 in our math curriculum, and have focused several days on Topic 1-8 specifically. It is heavy on math vocabulary and introduces some new concepts, so we have taken things a bit slow. I anticipate that we will finish Topic 1 next week and even have our first test!

Brown Bag autobiographies are well underway and we should be finished with those today, Friday, September 4th. If not, we will do so Tuesday (no school Monday, Labor Day). We also started exploring our Social Studies Atlas (pun intended) and we are almost done with our first worksheet. I will ask that you drop them off next week on Wednesday, so I can go through them and give the kids their grades. Speaking of grades and next week. I have started uploading grades to PowerSchool, so if you can, please go online and check things out there. If you need help doing so, just let me know. I would like to have another round of things ready for you to pick up on Wednesday, September 9th. I will make a list and put them in an envelope again for you.

The kids should have started in their Cursive Handbooks, specifically letters "A" and "B." I told them and posted it on our Google Classroom Stream, that I only want them to do the letters practice pages for now and to save the poems for when we finish all of the letters pages. I have recently started posting on our Stream at the end of each day, a list of tasks that the kids need to finish up with for the day, and the things we have been working on. Below is a screenshot of that (a little blurry, sorry). I think and hope it has been helpful.

So far, I have received most questionnaires, diagnostic tests (vocab and math), and the kids' Who Are You? worksheets back, but not all. If you have not done so, please, that stuff is very important :)

We started Charlotte's Web by E.B. White on Friday. We only read Chapter 1 so if your kiddo missed it, please take a few minutes to catch up. It is only a few pages. Thanks!

Lastly, we have taken on a student-teacher this year. Ms. Nuss is studying to be an elementary school teacher at UAF and has just joined us yesterday. She will be with our class all year and I am excited to welcome her. She will be putting together a little note and bio for your information.

By the time we get done, Ms. Nuss will be ready to go!

Next week...
I mentioned that there will not be school on Labor Day, Monday, September 7th, 2020. Tuesday, we will start our next Read Aloud, Wonder by R.J. Palacio. It is an uplifting book about an elementary student attending school for the first time in fifth grade. August Pullman (Auggie) has a facial deformity that has led him to be homeschooled, but now he is willing, ready, and able to give it a go with other children. It is a story about adversity, acceptance, perseverance, kindness, and triumph. I can't wait!

I mentioned earlier, that I would like to have some things prepared for you to pick up next Wednesday. I will have some math worksheets, a math test, some social studies worksheets, reading logs (if you would like the paper ones), some reading comprehension worksheets (Charlotte's Web), DOL worksheets, and finally some materials for our first science lesson and activity. PLEASE if you can, pick these things up on time so we can stay on schedule. Thanks so much!

And yes, another list...so next week we will:
-Continue Charlotte's Web by E.B. White (read together, worksheets together, and discourse)
-Paragraph two of our Summer Reflections
-Finish Paper Bag Autobiographies (several students still need to present)
-Continue our atlas' and worksheets (I will send home more on Wednesday)
-Start our first spelling assignments (we didn't have enough time to get to this last week)
-Review Math Topic 1 and Topic 1 Test
-Continue with our Daily Writing Prompts
-Finish Art/Writing (I can't imagine a world without...)
-Continue with Cursive Handbooks (Letters A, B, C, and D should be done by the end of the week)
-Haikus (I really want to start these, I need more time!)

Please have your child reading for 20 minutes a night. Then, have them record it on their reading logs. When the log is complete, you may either send it in, take a picture and email it to me, or enter it digitally in our Google Classroom. The chore of the week: Help clean any appliance in the house! It could be the toaster, microwave, refrigerator, washer, dryer...you name it parents, you choose!

  • Non-fiction Narrative Writing - Summer Break Reflections
  • Spelling
  • The United States - Geography, Mapping, Economy, States Reports

Mr. Sassman's 4th Grade Class Blog

Weller Elementary School

This week...
Weeks one and two are in the books! I think it is going pretty well so far. Lemonade, ya know! We have started exploring our Google Classroom and completed math topics 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, and 1-5! We are more than halfway through our first Read Aloud - Frindle, by Andrew Clements - and almost finished our first round of No Excuse Spelling Words. On a roll! I have enjoyed tremendously, reading the responses to our Daily Writing Prompts and between the Who Are You?, Parent Perspective, Zoom time, and those (very important) Writing Prompts, I am getting to know the kids well. Dare I say we are starting to establish a classroom culture? WHAAAAT?

So far, I have received most questionnaires, diagnostic tests (vocab and math), and the kids' Who Are You? worksheets back, but not all. If you have not done so, please, that stuff is very important :)

Simultaneously, If you have not already, please pick up your child's envelope of materials. It has a copy of Charlotte's Web, a Cursive Handbook, some construction paper, and some Social Studies Materials that I would like to start working on, so if your kiddo does not have those items, they may fall behind. If you cannot get here for some reason, I will make sure they get them (even if I have to drive them to you).

Next week...
I have read all of the "Parent Perspective" forms that have been sent back, and they overwhelmingly emphasized a preference for 'easing' into things, and I feel that we have done so nicely. As we progress, I will introduce more things, tasks, concepts, and initiatives. I do not want your kiddo to get stressed or overwhelmed. Please call or email and we can chat one-on-one if needed. I am not sure yet, how hard I can push these guys, but I strongly believe that having high expectations and rigor helps kids to grow beyond their perceived potential (Pygmalion Effect, see visual below). This is a great group of kids and I can already tell that each and every child has amazing qualities!

So...next week we will talk about The Writing Process:
Step 1 Prewriting/Brainstorming - 30 minutes of thought and bubble maps
Step 2 Drafting - Complete the first draft
Step 3 Revising - Read completed the first draft
Step 4 Proofreading - Re-read the first draft and scan for changes, edits, and improvements, mark it up
Step 5 Final Copy - Re-write the first draft with all the changes, edits, and improvements implemented

We will also talk about the 6 Traits of Writing:
Ideas - Details
Voice - Tone
Organization - Sequence of events
Sentence Fluency - Flow
Word Choice - Descriptive language
Conventions - Spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and presentation

If you couldn't tell yet, my life exists in a series of lists so next week we will:
-Continue with Frindle
-Start Charlotte's Web by E.B. White (read together, worksheets together, and discourse)
-Start the first draft of our Summer Reflections
-Start looking at our atlas' and worksheets
-Start our first spelling assignments
-Math topics 1-6, 1-7, 1-8, 1-9, and 1-10
-Writing Prompts
-Art/Writing (I can't imagine a world without...)
-Cursive Handbooks
-Haikus (maybe)

Weller Elementary School

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! I had the pleasure of meeting several kids, parents, guardians, aunts, uncles, and/or grandparents during our pre-school, in-person conferences here at Weller Elementary and I believe that the introductions went well. Thank you for attending, and if you were unable to make it, I hope we will meet in the near future.

I am so excited to be your child's teacher this year and so far the first two days have been interesting, to say the least. We are Zooming right along (sorry, I couldn't resist, not sorry). We have explored our Google Classroom a bit, started our "Perspective Art," began a read-aloud - Frindle - and we even did a mini-math lesson with the whiteboards. I mentioned a few times now, that we will be easing into our remote learning lifestyle and I will be adding new things every week, troubleshooting along the way. Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.

Speaking of Zoom, here is our class' meeting ID and password:
In the meantime, please take some time to enjoy this weekend and get away from technology :). For next week, I am trying to line up a day that works for all, so you can (if you are able) drop off your questionnaires, diagnostic tests (vocab and math), and the kids' Who Are You? worksheets. To save you a trip, I will also have some math papers, a copy of Charlotte's Web, a Cursive Handbook, and some Social Studies Materials for you to pick up.

If you have not yet, please read through the folder that you received. It has a lot of pertinent information about our class and school as a whole.

Homework Already???
Please have your child reading for 20 minutes a night. Then, have them record it on their reading logs. When the log is complete, you may either send it in, take a picture and email it to me, or enter it digitally in our Google Classroom (I am still working on the best way to submit this electronically). Math worksheets will also be a part of our day and may spill over into the evening...more to come on that, but I promise, no tears!

Lastly, as you know by reading this, our class blog is for you and your child to see a "snapshot" of what lessons and activities we do in class. I will also include a rough sketch of our schedule for the week, highlighting some of our main events, but please keep in mind that things may change from time to time. At the bottom of the blog post, I will list the homework and classwork that are due for the week, for your reference, as well as important dates coming up. As of now, these sections are still being developed.

ONGOING INFORMATION

GOOGLE DRIVE
You can access all of your student's digital assignments online and work at home if you would like. Simply go to www.gmail.com and type in their email address and password. Then find the Google Menu (where you will find the Drive, Docs, and Slides) icon in the top right corner (it is a nine-square grid next to their s-number). This is where they will make their Google Slides Presentation for their Biography Book Reports. It is as follows:

Username: s#@student.k12northstar.org (for example: s123456@student.k12northstar.org)
Password: s#g (for example: s123456g)
